10th Street is a main thoroughfare through our Midtown community. It connects a high volume of vehicular, pedestrian, and LIT commuters every day. Between Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive, 10th Street is host to on street parking, MARTA bus stops, multiple schools, Piedmont Park, vehicular lanes and one of the busiest bike lanes in all of Atlanta. In addition, Midtown hosts multiple large scale events that invite thousands of visitors throughout the year, further imposing on these very prominent crosswalks. MNA grew concerned about the variety of crosswalk signals and lack of visibility. Visitors and locals both struggled to understand the rules of engagement for each crossing leading to dangerous scenarios for everyone involved.
Over the last 18 months, RENEW invested in making in the crosswalks significant and more consistent in their engagement. Myrtle Street, Argonne Avenue, and an additional signal in front of Grady High School between Charles Allen Drive and Monroe Drive were fully funded and construction began. In January 2019, after months of stalled installation, MNA met with the RENEW team, Amir Farokhi and the Mayor’s Senior Transportation Policy Advisor to discuss the reason for the stalled project, share the seriousness of the safety concerns, and work on getting these restarted.
As of June 27, 2019, two of the three signals are completed and operational. MNA Infrastructure – ETP is tracking this project and in contact with the RENEW project team. We will keep this page updated with additional developments on the remaining Grady High School crosswalk located on 10th Street between Charles Allen Drive and Monroe Drive.
