Historic Preservation Committee: The Midtown Neighbors' Association formed a committee in October of 2005 to focus on historic preservation issues. Our first and primary goal as a committee is to establish Midtown as a Local Historic District with the City of Atlanta.

FACT SHEET – Proposed Midtown Local Historic District

For two years the Midtown Neighbors’ Association Historic Preservation Committee has been assessing whether to enhance Midtown’s existing national historic designation with an overlay of local zoning codes to protect the area’s unique character and charm.

Historic Preservation Committee Mission Statement
The mission of the Midtown Neighbors’ Association Historic Preservation Committee is to support the National Historic designation of Midtown with local zoning codes that will provide protection to Midtown’s community fabric, diversity, historic structures and establish Midtown as a true “historic neighborhood”.

Proposed Boundaries of the Midtown Local Historic District
Our Mission:

Establish a Local Historic District that will serve to protect the residential heart of Midtown. The proposed Local Historic District will be roughly bounded by the alley located to the west of Piedmont Road, Ponce De Leon Ave, 10th Street, Monroe Drive NE north of 9th, Monroe Circle NE, and Lakeview Ave NE.

Proposed Boundaries:

The attached map illustrates how the proposed boundaries of the Local Historic District will vary from the already established National Register Historic District.

Historic Preservation Committee: Our Achievements So Far!
Over the past three months, our committee has had many successes! Some of the accomplishments of the Historic Preservation Committee so far:

•Drafted a letter, signed by 10 neighbors, requesting the establishment of a Midtown Local Historic District. (A requirement of the UDC)
•Completed field survey of Piedmont Road district boundary.
•Developed and printed a tri-fold brochure about the proposed Midtown Local Historic District
•Designed a Midtown Preservation T-Shirt as a fund-raising campaign (to be printed soon).
•Established proposed boundaries of the district.
•Found a regular meeting place for our monthly meetings.
•Completed data entry of all 1999 National Register Nomination information.
•Developed database for collecting information on each structure.
•Approval by UDC of format for photography to be submitted and database information sheets.
•Research of overlapping SPI districts.
•Procured budget from MNA board of $1,000.
•Organized photography of the neighbor

Anne Fauver's Position on Infill Housing 1/25/06
Many residents of the district and other interested parties have been contacting me in the last few days as a result of the Mayor's moratorium on infill housing. Four of the six neighborhoods included in the moratorium are in District 6. As many of you know, the City Council will have two items on its agenda: extending the moratorium for an additional 120 days, which I will be supporting; and considering legislation to regulate building that is accomplished by the demolition of existing property.

I want to make it clear that preserving the character of our neighborhoods and our quality of life is my number one priority as I go into the process of considering a very complex piece of legislation in a very short period of time. I fully support the idea of regulating infill housing; the challenge is producing legislation that will apply that idea in a workable, equitable manner. Some of the issues we will have to resolve are whether the moratorium should be citywide; how to square the

Midtown Home Celebrates Centennial
July 23 marks the centennial of one of Atlanta’s oldest and unique private residences located at 880 Piedmont Avenue NE. An afternoon open house and “birthday party” are planned to mark the event and to help raise awareness of Midtown’s treasure of historic structures.
